Commands

Shieo (쉬어) is the resting position adopted on the instructor’s orders to allow practitioners to relax while remaining alert. It marks a pause between two exercises, without completely breaking the discipline of the class.

Even in this position, it is important to remain calm, silent, and ready to quickly resume the correct posture when the instructor gives a new command.

Stance rules :

  • The feet are shoulder-width apart and parallel.
  • The body weight is distributed evenly across both legs.
  • The hands are placed behind the back.
  • The shoulders are relaxed and the posture remains upright.
  • Keep your eyes focused ahead or on the instructor, remaining attentive.

Junbi Sogi (준비 서기) is the preparatory stance adopted before beginning an exercise, movement, tul, or sparrin. It allows you to focus, stabilize your body, and be ready to act.

It is important to be attentive, calm, and available in this position, mentally and physically preparing yourself for the action that will follow.

Stance rules :

  • The feet are shoulder-width apart and parallel.
  • The legs are slightly bent to maintain flexibility and stability.
  • The hands are placed in front of the lower abdomen, about 2 inches apart.
  • The elbows are relaxed and naturally directed downward.
  • The gaze is directed straight ahead, with concentration.

Kyong-rye – 경례 is the Korean word for “bow”. Depending on the situation, you will hear what we bow before (the instructor, the flag, or something else).

The beginning and end of the class always start with a bow to the instructor and assistant instructors, if there are any.

Never forget to bow to your partner before starting an exercise with them, even if the instructor does not ask you to do so. Respect and good manners are essential in the practice of Taekwon-Do, regardless of the partner.
